There were a few odd moves that went down yesterday...
D. Russell to the Warriors?
Russell is an improving, talented scoring guard. It's pretty easy for most players to fit with Curry, Thompson and Green, but he seems like an odd choice. He never stood out to me as much of a defender or rebounder. I know they lost Durant, who seemed like a much better fit with his size and D, not to even mention offensively which you just won't be able to match. Not sure why they felt so desperate to fill that salary spot that popped open with Durant leaving, they probably won't be a serious contender with Thompson next year anyway. Couldn't that save that slot for a better free agent in the price range next offseason?
Maybe the Warriors feel Thompson will be back before the end of the year and they will be legit champion contenders next year, so they are in win now mode. Can't blame them in that case I guess.
Butler to the Heat?
He is a really good player. But he isn't a top line superstar carry your team type of player. The Heat are a middling semi talented team. Butler is aging with a lot of tread on his tires. Butler talked about wanting to win all the time. Instead he goes to a team that certainly won't win anything just so he could be "the man". Usually players at his age who aren't quite good enough give up on the pipe dream of being "the man" on a championship team and start looking to win being second fiddle, not vice versa. Then what the hell are the Heat thinking By the time they get any talent around Butler he might be washed up to the point of being just an average player in two years. He's not a "box office" type player who will put fannys in the seats either.
Most of the other moves made sense to me at least.
The Nets moves seem a little overrated. I get what they did is no easy feet. But Durant has a year off and probably won't be the same when he does get back . Probably still worth the money. Kyrie I think it overated a bit and could be a cancer here as well. Jordan seemed to become pretty irrelevent the last couple years and lost some of his luster. But that seemed to reflect in his fairly cheap price tag, don't think he is that old though so maybe he can rejuvanate himself.
